Hi, Iโm Wasim Asghar
Wasim Asghar is a Licensed Professional Engineer in Texas (PE), Florida (PE) and Ontario (P. Eng) with consulting experience in design, commissioning and plant engineering for clients in Energy, Mining and Infrastructure.
He holds Bachelors of Engineering โ Electrical with distinction from McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada (2010) and Master of Engineering โ Energy Systems from University of Toronto (2013) which was completed with full-time work.
In 2014, he undertook a two year project assignment for a mining client in Florida and also decided to pursue PE Licensure in United States. The road to licensure was challenging primarily because of lack of study resources for the FE and PE exams.
Wasim passed both exams in first attempts (FE in October 2014 and PE in April 2015). The lessons learned during the exam preparation process encourage him to write this book which is designed to help aspiring examinees better prepare for the latest CBT format of FE Electrical and Computer Engineering Exam.

ABOUT THE
PE Electrical & Computer Exam Preparation Course
If you are not sure about the level of toughness of the PE Power exam, read on. The PE Power exam contains 80 questions, majority of them are multi-choice questions but they can also be drag-and-drop, multi-answer, point-and-click, as well as blank-in questions, which can be tough to answer if you aren't used to them. Guessing on questions does not result in negative marking. Actual exam time is 8 hours which means that you get just exactly 6 minutes per question on the exam.
Here are some of the steps that you can take to get your exam preparation on-track right away
Download the NCEESยฎ PE Power Reference Handbook
One of the first steps that you need to take is to get your hands on the NCEESยฎ PE Power Reference Handbook. It will be the only reference material (along with codes and standards) allowed during the exam and contains important formulas that you may need during your PE Power exam. It is important to develop familiarity with this handbook. To get your free electronic copy you'll have to make an account at MyNCEES and visit the references section to get the latest edition.
NCEESยฎ also provides a practice exam for the PE Power exam that can help you get an idea about the level of difficult. NCEESยฎ practice exam is available in paperback format.
Learn features of your calculator that are relevant to PE Power exam
NCEESยฎ has an approved list of calculators for the FE and PE exams. Approved calculator models permitted during the exam of 2021 are mentioned on their exam policy. Effective use of calculator can help you save a lot of time on the exam and also reduce possible calculation errors.
You can check out our blog which outlines which calculators youโre permitted to use and also a guide on how to use them. You should try stick to one calculator and learn it inside-out while preparing for the PE Power exam so that you are 100% comfortable with it during the exam.
Make a study schedule for the PE Power exam
It is important to design and stick to a study routine that is compatible with your daily, weekly and monthly schedule. There are a number of strategies and approaches that can be taken in this regard but the most important point is consistency.
Schedule, learning styles, strategies and even level of commitment can vary from one individual to individual - that is OK. It's also true that the creation of schedule may be an overwhelming task in itself since personal circumstances, time constraints, current knowledge of the exam and comprehension of the subject matter may make you believe that you don't know how to plan it out.
If you are looking for some help in this area, then take a look at the PE Power Exam Planner. It can greatly help you in getting started with a weekly schedule for PE Power exam preparation. You can download it for free and start streamlining your study schedule ahead of time.
Study all topics as outlined in the latest PE Power exam specification
There is a wide range of topics that you can be expect on the PE Power exam. As discussed earlier, PE Power exam practically tests you on all areas of power systems engineering. Thoroughness as well as depth of preparation is very important in passing this challenging exam in the first attempt.
If you have a power systems background and are already in the industry then it's definitely a plus. But even then, you will come across many new knowledge areas for the first time and might be tempted to skip at least some exam topics.
On the other hand, if you majored in something other than power systems engineering or it's been a long time since you graduated from university/college, then you can expect quite a few new topics that will require your focus.
If you are not interested in taking this exam multiple times, it is best not to skip any knowledge area because it is a very risky proposition. All questions carry equal weight and you never know if an easy question gets asked from one of the topics that you skipped. It is possible for very tough questions can appear from topics that you thought you knew well. So it is best not to speculate and try to study all exam topics without skipping anything.
Practice PE Power style problems
At the end of the day, you will only pass if you get questions right - correct?
To that end, it is very important to practice high quality PE Power style problems in concert with the NCEESยฎ PE Power Reference Handbook. The more you practice the better you get. But you should also make sure that you are not getting a false sense of confidence by practicing just the easy problems. The question bank should help you develop competency in all areas of the exam with a well-rounded approach focusing on both numerical and theoretical problems,
